Betye Saar

Betye Saar was a pioneering African American artist known for her assemblage works that confronted racial stereotypes. Her 1972 piece "The Liberation of Aunt Jemima" — which transformed the racist caricature into a figure of Black empowerment — is considered one of the most important works of political art of the 20th century. She continued creating art into her late 90s.
