What the data shows
- ●The death rate dropped from 19.1 to 7.6 per 1,000 — a 60% decline — thanks to antibiotics, vaccines, sanitation, and modern medicine.
- ●Life expectancy nearly doubled from 46.5 to 73.3 years. The biggest gains came from eliminating childhood deaths from infection.
- ●Infant mortality fell from 152 to 25 per 1,000 births — an 84% drop. This is the single biggest driver of life expectancy gains.
- ●Despite all this progress, total deaths per year rose from 48M to 62M because the world population more than tripled. More people alive = more people dying, even at lower rates.
