Frequently asked questions

How does the Death Clock work?

The Death Clock starts with the average life expectancy for your country (from WHO data), then adjusts it based on lifestyle factors known to affect lifespan: smoking, alcohol, exercise, diet, sleep, stress, BMI, and existing health conditions. Each factor adds or subtracts years based on epidemiological research.

Is this accurate?

No — and it is not intended to be. This tool uses population-level averages and cannot account for genetics, accidents, medical breakthroughs, or individual circumstances. It is designed to give you perspective on how lifestyle choices statistically affect lifespan, not to predict your actual death date. Think of it as a data-driven mirror, not a crystal ball.

What affects life expectancy the most?

The biggest modifiable factors are: smoking (up to -10 years), physical activity (up to +4.5 years), alcohol consumption (up to -6 years), and body weight (up to -5 years for obesity). Non-modifiable factors include sex (women live ~4 years longer on average) and country of residence (life expectancy ranges from 53 to 85 years depending on the country). See the full life expectancy table for country comparisons.

This calculator uses population-level mortality data from the WHO and applies general risk multipliers based on known lifestyle factors. It is for entertainment and educational purposes only. It is not a medical diagnosis and cannot predict your actual date of death. Individual outcomes depend on genetics, family history, healthcare access, and many factors this tool cannot measure. Consult a medical professional for personalised health advice.
