Where does your data come from?
All data is sourced from the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations population estimates, and World Bank development indicators. We use the most recent published figures available.
How accurate are the live counters?
The counters use a statistical rate derived from annual mortality totals. They are close approximations, not real-time feeds. At the global scale (~62 million deaths per year), the per-second rate of ~1.97 produces a reliable running estimate.
Do the counters track actual deaths as they happen?
No. There is no global system that records every death in real time. Our counters calculate an estimate based on how many seconds have passed since midnight, multiplied by the statistical death rate.
How often is the data updated?
We update country statistics and cause-of-death data when new reports are published by the WHO or UN, typically annually.
